Our patination room is always a talking point…th

Our patination room is always a talking point…the colours on the wall chart to the array of colours on the walls after many years of application is a work of art in itself. Once applied we use a selection of salts combined with heat to accelerate the bronze’s natural ageing process.

What is bronze patina?

Patina is a thin layer that forms on the surface of bronze (and other metals) over time. It’s a natural result of bronze’s exposure to air, water, and other environmental factors.

There is evidence to suggest that once finished, ancient bronzes were brightly painted – the antique patinas that we see today are simply the effect of time and the elements on the bronze during the centuries since the paint faded away.

This effect contributes to the unique character and aesthetic of bronze sculptures and reproducing the antique look is a process we specialise in here at Talos.

We encourage artists to take part in the patination process – overseeing the burnishing of their work and even brining in their clients for colour selection – much like the relationship between artist and foundry in Ancient Greece where the practice first started.

Join our next Sculpture Workshop with portrait and figurative sculptor @keziahburtartist

In these workshops you will be taught how to sculpt a piece in wax, take a tour of the foundry and see the ancient techniques still used in the casting process today.
Your mould will then be cast and finished in bronze for you by the team here at Talos Foundry.

Workshop 3 - Small portrait
📆 Saturday the 22nd of March

Workshops will be limited to 8 participants.
There will be a size limit of 5”x5” for each piece.

The cost per person per Workshop is £540.
This includes refreshments, lunch, tuition, materials, a foundry tour and an invitation at your convenience to come back into the foundry to watch the patination of your piece and take it home!

Welcoming new faces into the foundry.
Last week was the second in our series of new Sculpture Workshops lead by artist @keziahburtartist

With tuition by Keziah, each artist created their own ‘door knocker’ piece in wax and then enjoyed a tour of the foundry to understand the complete casting process.

The team here at Talos are now turning their work into bronze before the artists come back to apply patination, then take their works home to adorn their chosen door!

We look forward to seeing the pieces in situ.
